WHAT IS
SCHOOL AMERICA?
The School America Literacy Project serves the Whittier Elementary School in three ways: first to encourage reading, each first and second grade student is provided a book each month for their enjoyment and pleasure; second to assist those students identified by teachers as needing help, by providing tutors; and third, to provide self awareness and self-esteem to programs for girls in the fifth and sixth grade through informative monthly presentations to the Girl's Club meeting.
HISTORY OF THE PROJECT
The School America Project has had a continuous relationship with Whittier Elementary School for more than eight years. As early as 1992 the School America Project was involved with various schools and presented programs of interest to the community.
HOW CAN YOU PARTICIPATE?
We depend on contributions from Sorors to supplement our activities. Some of the ways you can help are as follows:
- Donate new or gently used books appropriate for 1st and 2nd grade
students.
- Distribute books to the children on the designated date.
- Insert bookplates in books to acknowledge donors.
- Provide refreshments for the Girl's Club.
- Present an interesting and informative program for the girls.
- Volunteer to tutor children identified by the teachers.
